We heard rumors yesterday that someone was calling St. Joseph County voters and asking who they were voting for in the presidential race. If the voter said McCain, they were told their vote had been recorded and there was no reason to come to the polls and stand in line on Tuesday. Fox 28 in South Bend covered it last night, leading us to believe it’s more than rumors.

A South Bend woman says someone tried to trick her into thinking she already voted.

Now St. Joseph County elections official are telling voters not to fall for the newest type of voter fraud.

“I feel really bad for my old age that’s the first time that I got scammed like that, terrible,” said the woman, who didn’t want to be identified.

She says she received a phone call from a woman claiming to be an elections official.

“This young lady was saying they’re doing something new and something different and I don’t have to go out and vote,” she said.

The caller said people could now vote by phone and asked her who she wanted to vote for.

The woman said John McCain.

She was then told her vote was cast and she didn’t need to vote Tuesday.

Election officials say if you think you voted by phone, you’re wrong.

“They haven’t voted at all. It’s some sort of scam,” said Murray Winn, St. Joseph County Board of Elections.

Winn says the phone call is a case of voter fraud.

“Whoever is pulling this prank is certainly trying to deprive a voter from their constitutional right to cast a ballot and that’s the unfortunate thing in all of this,” he said.

  1. That type of trick has been a traditional GOP tactic but whoever is responsible for it hopefully will be brought to justice.

Here are 2 links to 2 great ideas on how to avoid the whole voter registration fraud issues.

The first comes via Richard Hasen. Richard L. Hasen, the William H. Hannon distinguished professor at Loyola Law School, writes the Election Law Blog.

The article I think people should read at the link below appears in Slate.

ROB RICHIE and ADAM FOGEL have offered solutions also via an Atlantic Journal Constitution opinion piece.
Rob Richie is the executive director of FairVote, a nonpartisan, nonprofit election reform and voting rights organization in Takoma Park, MD. Adam Fogel directs FairVote’s Right to Vote Initiative.

Voter registration fraud is a valid crime as is vote fraud. However, if we can remove the illegitimate names off of voter rolls the issue becomes easier to manage, illegal voters can never be able to even cast a vote and GOP voter suppression cases may be a thing of the past.

  2. It’s probably Todd Palin as by now he’s figured out that being the husband of a woman VP and living DC will not be much fun…she can’t talk about work, no security clearance, the hunting and fishing sucks, not enough snow for winter sports, and everyone will be wondering what it is exactly he does for a living beside sleeping with The Princess….(gee…maybe that is all he does now?)

  5. FH,

Once again another one of my posts has been deleted. Why?

First time I asked about it there was no reply but it was restored. Second time you claimed it was your spam blocker. Third time, fourth time and fifth time you don’t even reply to my queries anymore. If you are removing my posts I would rather you just remove it and say so or why. But at this stage I think you just don’t like me pointing out inconsistencies.

I realize it’s your blog but come on…you seem to be open to differing opinions or so I thought.

  6. FH,
What can I say! Now my comment is restored or for some reason just showed back up. I always renew my cache, etc….but no joke my top post was not showing up just 2 minutes ago. There have been others that have “disappeared” to never return but this one is back. Sorry about my comment in this case.

  7. Pat Bauer bored again…

Seriously, can’t they pull her phone records to find the call? Whoever is doing this should be shot. If this was hindering Obama instead there would be an uproar.

  8. Hey FH – from MSNBC’s Chuck Todd…any thoughts on the good hit for Daniels?

Indiana: The most surprising battleground state development of the cycle is Indiana. Forget Colorado, North Carolina or Virginia — we knew those were coming. Indiana does not fit the profile of a state that seemed ready to move toward the Democrats, but move it has. The Democratic wave, though, isn’t so big that Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels appears threatened. In fact, a Daniels win in this climate could catapult the one-time rising star of the Bush administration to national prominence again. Daniels is a conservative pragmatist that the party may desperately need to take a leadership role. If Obama wins the state, it’ll be by a nose hair and he might sweep out conservative Rep. Mark Souder at the same time.

  9. @patrick in IL (5:01), Listen, I have no idea why your comments don’t show up. You come here more than we do. Occassionally if a comment has a lot of links it will be flagged as spam and we have to approve it. That’s rare. Otherwise, we never, ever, filter comments or content. We certainly never delete any. You’ll just have to figure it out on your end, because it’s certainly not on ours.

  10. @southside democrat (11:11), Good stuff. Mark our words, if the D’s win big on Tuesday and win Indiana, and Mitch wins big, he’s on everyone’s short list in 2012. He’d never do it, but he’ll have to learn how to say no to some pretty important people.

  11. @patrick in IL (5:01), We’re currently working on some new stuff for the site that will be rolled out after election day when we have some time. One of those things will be the ability to register with this site (though this will be optional). If you are registered with the site, you shouldn’t have any more problems with your comments disappearing. Until then, you’ll just have to bear with us.
