The first ad from the race to take down Senator Evan Bayh is now up. Marlin Stutzman takes on the empty suit in his first spot.

In the meantime Richard Behney, one of the other guys running, is writing a book (yay!). An advisor of his posted an excerpt of the narrative on Facebook, proving why friends shouldn’t let plumbers write books.

Throughout our nation’s history, America has never been in the predicament where we find ourselves now. We have never been in such a dire situation before. In the past, we have fought off external threats, but this time the threat is more ominous. That’s because the threat is from within. Events are unfolding as the result of our very own government. This is no time to play nice and smile. That time has passed.

Ultimately, most Americans want to take care of themselves rather than to be “kept” by their government. So, government must step out of the way. For those who do need a helping hand, government must allow our charitable institutions like churches and nonprofits to do what they do best. Those in need will be taken care of, but not due to anything our government does. Government’s job is not to be your mommy. Government’s job is to defend this nation while removing any threats that keep its citizens from being able to pursue their dreams. That is an ideal that we must preserve at all costs if we expect the United States of America to remotely resemble the country it was founded to be. We must preserve the big ideal!

As Americans, however, we have become rather complacent. As we have gone about our daily lives raising our children, volunteering in our communities and running our businesses, we have failed to keep a close watch on the loss of freedoms that we now face. Our founders warned us about this. Freedom must be nourished or it will elude us. Forces exist in the name of power that desire to take away those freedoms. That is precisely the struggle in which we find ourselves. If we do not change things now, one day soon we won’t be able to dream the American dream. We won’t be able to start a business, because we won’t be of the right color, culture or class. The government will pick the winners and losers. We won’t be innovative any longer, because there will be no reason or reward for being innovative. In fact, there will likely be more debt in being innovative! We will see our standard of living decay, largely because we won’t have any industry. America will become Europe without any of the quaint, old architecture.

  1. Wow, that Behney is a nut job. I hope Marlin beats the pants off of him in the primary.

  2. I just find Behney fascinating. He’s like some modern day Huey Long populist, only without Huey’s charisma. He’s exceptionally vain and shallow in a way that just makes me scratch me head. I find it bizarre how his website is just covered with close-up photos of his face. I listened to one of his speeches and marveled that he could talk so long without touching on virtually a single issue. It was all a hollow populist rant of cliches layered upon cliches. I find him entertaining in a way similar to when my cat chases a marble across the floor.

    • Classic. You write the column critiquing his book.

    Creepy vain.

  5. Bates did the best at the Sullivan debate overall. Marlin was a close 2nd.

Thank you Mr. Springer and Ms Yoho for a nice event.

  6. I agree with Behney’s supporters on many issues. I hope they fight with us against big government despite the outcome of the primary.

But most of all, I just wish Behney wouldn’t go so far as to create disturbing imagery about Obama marching us off to the gas chambers. The facts, the current situation our country is in is scary enough!

Even the moderates are seeing that, but I’m sorry, they probably won’t buy into holocaust comparisons.

  7. The disturbing imagery, by the way, was used on a couple of occasions and most recently at an Indy twp GOP meeting. I think it was Warren Twp.

  8. If he’s as good of a business owner as he wants us to believe then he should probably have a higher rating on Angie’s List.

  9. Nice, The republican party has already runoff the libertarian vote, keep thinking and speaking like this and you will run off the rest of us. And then you will see how many elections your precious GOP wins …. Oh thats right, you have found out already.

There are enough of us that are tired of voting for the candidates sanctioned and preselected by the GOP that we will stay at home or vote for a third party even if that means ensuring a Democrat win. At least with the Democrats we know what we will get.

  10. Anonymous, what did you see in the previous nine posts that offended you or wasn’t true?

  11. I definitely think we should do all that we can to bring in the libertarian and true conservative vote, however, isn’t Anonymous at 5:08 pm creating a HUGE STRAWMAN by implying any of these GOP Senate candidates have been “sanctioned and preselected” by the GOP? How about we stop looking at WHO is involved and instead look at WHAT people have done to prove themselves conservative?

I don’t believe any of these candidates are RINOs, so what is the beef, Anonymous 5:08 pm?

  12. Give us a break, Anonymous @ 5:08 pm. If you can’t take this lukewarm criticism, you need to get out of the kitchen. It is fair game for us to criticize Behney’s shallow populist rants and his vain posting of propaganda-like, closeup pictures of himself all over his webpage. This guy is railing against career politicians, yet he portrays himself in such a vain way that he’s a caricature of himself. That clearly merits critcism. Put on your big boy pants and suck it up.

  13. Anonymous 5:08 pm, do you really want some guy representing you whose campaign is self-absorbed with collages of a middle-aged Abercrombie & Fitch model wannabe. He might be able to pull off these glamour shots in Napa Valley California, but not in Indiana. Study harder and lose the gel, Richard. Hoosiers prefer authenticity.

  14. HowardRoark, can you please elaborate on your mention of Behney “creating disturbing imagery about Obama marching us off to the gas chambers?”

  15. I have no preconcieved notion of who should be the US Senate candidate I was leaning toward Behney but he got smoked in the debate one liners dont get it when you have 3 minutes to speak. I agree with previous post Bates won debate and Marlin was a close 2nd.
